Vibraphonist Thomas Mackay gathered a few friends on the morning of Sept 23rd, 2025 to celebrate the music of John Coltrane at his home studio in Honolulu. What you hear on this recording is spontaneous interpretations of Trane. First Take. Jeffrey Barak on Drums, Ernie Provencher, electric upright bass, Thomas Mackay, Vibraphone. ( this was the first meeting of this particular trio as Jeffrey was new to the mix, which makes this even more intuitive as all 3 musicians are finding there space not only within the compositions of Trane but also experience the moment!

This track pay homage to Jamaican Vibraphonist Lennie Hibbert Born 1928. Lennie was Prominent the the Jazz scene of Jamaica in the late 1950's and recorded two albums on Coxsone Dodds, Studio One record label. On this track Mr. Mackay only pays homage to Mr. Hibbert's melodies and Riddims, he also shows his rootz as a musician himself having spent countless years under the Mentorship of another Studio one legend.. Vocalist Norma Fraser. Through his years with Norma Fraser he was shown how studio created there sound first hand as Norma was at studio one the same years as Lennie Hibberts.

Phoenix ( music of Trane and Monk ) is the audio from a session from 2013, Originally recorded as a television broadcast as part of " Rogue Valley Musicians Spotlight." This session was one of the first public performance from Thomas Mackay in over 8 years due to health issues that did not allow him to physically play vibraphone any longer, hense the title of the recording " Phoenix" as this is literally rising up from the ashes of physical pain from decades. The music presented on this recording are composition from Trane and Monk who have been heavy influence on Mr. Mackay for decades. This recording is also a homage to the late Bobby Hutcherson. This influence can be heard how Mackay's phrases the melodies and arranges each composition. More significantly Mackay channels himself through these compositions as he Rises up from the Ashes regaining his place in the world of Jazz Vibraphonist.
